{"id":1409,"date":"2023-08-31T01:52:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-31T01:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/?p=1409"},"modified":"2023-08-08T10:25:47","modified_gmt":"2023-08-08T10:25:47","slug":"rich-broderick","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/?p=1409","title":{"rendered":"Tribute # 19: Rich Broderick"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Rich Broderick<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/best-broderick.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1441\" src=\"http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/best-broderick-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"best broderick\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/best-broderick-300x224.jpg 300w, http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/best-broderick-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/best-broderick-400x300.jpg 400w, http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/best-broderick.jpg 1932w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been fortunate to have a male best friend most my years. &nbsp;I\u2019ve already mentioned Rocky, Lance and Bob.&nbsp; Lance moved to Australia and Rocky and Bob both died young. &nbsp;I first met <b>Rich<\/b> <b>Broderick<\/b> when my son Jack and his son Gabe started kindergarten together at the French Immersion School in Saint Paul.&nbsp; &nbsp;Rich was the political writer for <i>City<\/i> <i>Pages<\/i> and mostly had scathing things to say about politicians, always with wry humor.&nbsp; Our sons got to be best friends, and so did we.&nbsp; Our families went on trips together and had Thanksgivings together.<\/p>\n<p>There are certain things only fathers share, whether about their children or their love lives (mostly always in good humor).&nbsp; Rich was one of those, a confidant. &nbsp;We could make each other laugh.&nbsp; I kept telling him we should start a &#8220;Click and Clack&#8221; radio show for fathers.<\/p>\n<p>One of our best times was just the two of us motoring down Highway 61 to Clarksdale, Mississippi, to take in the juke joints.&nbsp; We met people along the way &#8211; and then for miles afterwards laugh about what just happened.&nbsp; Arriving Clarksdale mid-afternoon, we got a room.&nbsp; Rich wanted to nap.&nbsp; I wanted to check out the town.&nbsp; Coming back later, wanting Rich to wish he\u2019d come with me, I embellished a story about meeting a beautiful young lady at the \u201cCrossroads.\u201d&nbsp; (Clarksdale is famous for its musical history, including Robert Johnson\u2019s tune about the intersection of Highways 49 &amp; 61.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/crossroads_sign.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1476\" src=\"http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/crossroads_sign.jpg\" alt=\"crossroads_sign\" width=\"294\" height=\"300\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I told Rich:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cWow, you should have come.&nbsp; Right at the Crossroads, a brand-new Church\u2019s Fried Chicken is opening up with a Blues band in the parking lot, free chicken wings, and a big crowd.&nbsp; When it started to rain, I opened the tail gate of the van to make a canopy, and, sure enough, this pretty young woman &#8211; the most beautiful woman we\u2019ve met on the trip yet &#8211; shapely too &#8211; looks in my direction as if wanting to join me in getting out of the rain.&nbsp; So I nod come on over.&nbsp; Sitting close, even catching her fragrance &#8211; oh man, I was wild with the possibilities!&nbsp; &#8230;&#8230;. Probably should have kept it going, but figured you were wondering when I\u2019d get back, so I just left.&nbsp; She did ask where we were staying though, so you know, maybe &#8230;&#8230;.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When I had gotten back to the motel, Rich had the door wide open saying the room smelled of mothballs.&nbsp; I began telling him the story, and just as I finish, there\u2019s this huge commotion in the parking lot, a car roaring up, and someone shouting \u201cThere it is!
