{"id":2311,"date":"2023-10-13T01:13:00","date_gmt":"2023-10-13T01:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/?p=2311"},"modified":"2023-09-16T13:10:13","modified_gmt":"2023-09-16T13:10:13","slug":"chap-25-skips-back","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/?p=2311","title":{"rendered":"Chap. 25 &#8211; Skip&#8217;s Back"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Chapter 25<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong><em>Skip\u2019s Back!<\/em><\/strong>  (in 2 Parts)  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>PART ONE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Santa Fe is an easy-going, slow paced, smallish city which perfectly fit our mood with walks down \u201cPotters Alley\u201d (a\/k\/a Canyon Road), or admiring the art collection in the State Capitol, or some fishing, or hiking down one of the Hyde Park trails.&nbsp; Mari, our host, had grown up on Canyon Road in her family\u2019s pottery and basket shop, which also specialized in Native American jewelry.&nbsp; Now she was the state law librarian, a grandma, married to her high school sweetheart, and happy to see Patty and all of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Patty and Mari had become friends while Mari worked for The Bridge, a Minneapolis shelter for runaway youth and Patty was volunteering.&nbsp; A \u201crunaway shelter\u201d is not how they described it, rather \u201ca safe place for \u2018throwaway\u2019 kids to get off the streets or out of a bad home situation.\u201d &nbsp;&nbsp;Sitting around the campfire, our second night there, with blankets, under a full moon (and no snow), it was a pleasure to hear Patty and Mari going back over old times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Adirondak-View.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"759\" src=\"http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Adirondak-View-1024x759.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2948\" srcset=\"http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Adirondak-View-1024x759.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Adirondak-View-300x222.jpg 300w, http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Adirondak-View-768x569.jpg 768w, http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Adirondak-View-1536x1138.jpg 1536w, http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Adirondak-View-405x300.jpg 405w, http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Adirondak-View.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u201cYeah, remember Timmy Mostello, the kid who played piano?\u201d&nbsp; Patty started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cAnd Jenny Steiner, who lived at one of the group homes,\u201d added Mari. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u201cAnd the time you were on TV and those kids ran away to The Bridge because you made it sound so good!\u201d laughed Patty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;We all heard how Timmy, a high school drop-out living on the streets, went for a walk with Patty to the Bridge Alternative School, where he saw the school\u2019s piano, and said, \u201cA piano!\u201d and sat down and \u201cplayed like Mozart.\u201d &nbsp;At Patty\u2019s suggestion, Timmy then initiated a reunion with his mom, bringing Patty along, and the deal was struck:&nbsp; So long as Timmy goes back to school, he gets to move back home; but Mrs. Mostello doesn\u2019t get to say anything about what else Timmy does except staying in school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u201cHave you heard from Timmy lately?\u201d Mari asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u201cNot for years.&nbsp; Last I knew he was married, being a good father to a couple kids, with a sweet wife. &nbsp;They\u2019d send a Christmas card \u2013 but not for a long time now,\u201d I did hear that Hunter, remember him, got shot by the cops . . . Have you kept up with Jenny?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Jenny, we learned, was a suburban kid, way ahead of her time, kicked out of her parents\u2019 home for dating an older Black man.&nbsp; She was high on acid when she first showed up at The Bridge, a court-ordered placement.&nbsp; \u201cYeah, it was really great having that family court judge like us so much,\u201d Mari said, \u201cand you know, after Jenny quit seeing us as authority figures over her life, she really prospered, ended up going to college.&nbsp; Last I heard, she was still helping The Bridge with its annual fundraiser.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Mari wanted to hear all about our travels, and in particular, more about Boulder, Montana, Eloise\u2019s school board race, and whether the cowboys we made friends with might genuinely be open to a dialogue about Native American fishing rights, treaty rights, and stopping pipelines across reservation lands.&nbsp; \u201cI\u2019m asking because I\u2019ve invited the Navajo Nation Leadership Council to this party I\u2019m throwing for you guys \u2013 and I\u2019ve told them you\u2019ve got a pretty good pulse on how Trump\u2019s America is thinking these days.&nbsp; Patty, you think those Cowboys could be convinced to smoke a peace pipe with my Navajo friends, or were their jeans just too tight?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u201cWell . . . . \u201d Patty started, taking a second to gather her thoughts, \u201cYou know, that\u2019s a really good question.&nbsp; Too much of our traveling has just been escapades . . . We\u2019ve put too much effort in trying to start this Rumpkins thing, and precious little actually making friends across the political divide.&nbsp; Has anybody heard anything from Susie or Eloise back in Boulder . . . ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Max, looking chagrined, admitted he\u2019d hardly spoken with Eloise \u2013 except to know she\u2019s been super-busy campaigning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Steve jumped in, \u201cWell, you know whom we can get back in touch with?&nbsp; Those Texas guys we met at the Phoenix RV Park.&nbsp; Rocky\u2019s \u2018What is Fun\u2019 thing actually worked, and we got their phone numbers to stay in touch.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;\u201cPut some pot in that peace pipe, and it might actually work,\u201d Rocky suggested<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Skip, Sally, Jack <em>and the bartender<\/em> from Dirty Nick\u2019s arrived in time for Mari\u2019s party \u2013 arrived in a brand-new Land Rover to go with our Land Yacht. &nbsp;The bartender, whom we knew as \u201cBig Sam\u201d while we were in L.A., had been talking with Jack and Sally, at the Hollywood fundraiser about their heading out for Santa Fe.&nbsp; \u201cYeah, well, sure,\u201d Jack said when Big Sam asked if there was room for him.&nbsp; Big Sam was a long-haired, though bald on top, clean shaven, rough looking, but friendly guy.&nbsp; He was ready to get back on the road himself, even before he met the \u201cTravelin\u2019 Rumpkins\u201d \u2013 what he called us \u2013 \u201cand I can help ya,\u201d he said.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;And guess who also showed up for the party?&nbsp; Sunshine and Peaches.&nbsp; So our updated Ken Kesey-like Merry Pranksters kept on growing, now truly a caravan, more and more freaky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Skip was disappointed hearing nothing much had come of the meeting with the famous Udall family in Tucson, but when told about Mari&#8217;s question as to whether the cowboys back in Boulder were just on the make, Skip said he had been staying in touch with Susie, and that Susie\u2019s cowboy friends were indeed helping on Eloise\u2019s campaign, very gung-ho about electing somebody who was not a Democrat or a Republican.&nbsp; \u201cLooks like she\u2019s going to win,&#8221; Skip said, adding Rocky-like &#8220;You sisters might have a thing about guys whose jeans are too tight, but it seems the body <em>politic <\/em>is what these guys are more infatuated with.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chapter 25 Skip\u2019s Back!
