{"id":2392,"date":"2023-11-06T01:30:00","date_gmt":"2023-11-06T01:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/?p=2392"},"modified":"2023-10-05T13:01:44","modified_gmt":"2023-10-05T13:01:44","slug":"chap-39-thanksgiving-2022-on-the-road","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/?p=2392","title":{"rendered":"Chap. 39 &#8211; Thanksgiving, 2022, on the Road"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Chapter 39<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong><em>Thanksgiving, 2022, on the Road<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Wednesday before Thanksgiving, a balmy low 80s-degree day, Huck arrived and <em>without<\/em> Sunshine and Peaches.&nbsp; \u201cThey know where we are, though,\u201d he told Patty, \u201cIt\u2019s just they wanted to go see some ol\u2019 pals up in Georgia first.&nbsp; They dropped me off at a truck stop by the intersection with I-75 and headed north.&nbsp; Found a trucker right away heading south all the way down to Naples, but geez-Louise! &nbsp;It was quite a walk from the Sarasota exit to here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; We asked Huck if there were any memorable times in Lafayette or New Orleans and where\u2019s Big Sam?&nbsp; \u201cBig Sam bought a bus ticket back to L.A. after having a falling-out with Peaches \u2013 apparently Sunshine was complaining that Sam was trying to pimp her for some cash \u2013 but I don\u2019t believe it.&nbsp; I think Peaches was just getting jealous.&nbsp; Me and Sunshine are just best friends now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;Meanwhile, Rocky and Skip went around the RV park inviting fellow dwellers to our \u201cThanksgiving Dinner,\u201d where we promised entertainment as well as food.&nbsp; Patty and Sally followed behind asking if anybody had a good joke or story they wanted recorded to be part of the entertainment.&nbsp; Steve was off at Hazel and George\u2019s to see if they wanted to come to \u201cour place\u201d for dinner instead of going downtown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Later on, Skip and Rocky were at poolside, off by themselves, trying to put \u201cthe jig saw puzzle\u201d (Rocky\u2019s term) together. &nbsp;They listed things they\u2019d overlooked so far, like:&nbsp; What\u2019s Gordy\u2019s last name?&nbsp; What\u2019s the name of Gordy\u2019s cell mate? &nbsp;What was Abdul\u2019s last name, or real name?&nbsp; What were his Canadian connections \u2013 had any of his family come forward? &nbsp;etc.&nbsp; And they talked about when would be the right time, if ever, to take what they knew to the authorities \u2013 maybe an opportunity back in Boulder to launch a Forward Party candidate for Jefferson County Sheriff . . . \u201cor maybe embarrass Trump World about not having fought for a wall on our <em>northern<\/em> border,\u201d Rocky joked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;When Max showed up, Rocky took off, leaving Max and Skip alone.&nbsp; Max said he had called Lisa right away with an early Thanksgiving Be-Well-wish and learned a lot:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Lisa and Ken both had known some of the SLA crowd back in the 70s, when they were activists together in California. &nbsp;But Lisa said they went out of their way to condemn the SLA\u2019s tactics.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nevertheless, Ken had struck up a friendship with a guy named Gordy Ettinger, while Gordy was doing time for that Sacramento bank robbery.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Max was sure Lisa knew everything Ken was up to, including his latest thing, raising money in Hollywood to finance a \u201cdisengagement and de-radicalization\u201d program <em>in<\/em> <em>Vancouver<\/em> to counter disaffected Somalis from joining \u2013 or aid them in disengaging from \u2013 terrorist groups.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Later that day, Skip found a private moment with Rocky and said, \u201cWell, we know Gordy\u2019s last name &#8211; it\u2019s Ettinger.&nbsp; And we now know Ken is up to something in Vancouver.&nbsp; I think maybe we should clue Max in on the puzzle \u2013 sounds like Lisa, his-ex, could supply a whole lot of info about her brother Ken.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;\u201cWhy not get everybody on the bus into it?\u201d Rocky joked. &nbsp;\u201cJust tell Patty we\u2019ve got a real-live murder mystery she can sell to Hollywood.\u201d  Next day we served a simple feast of turkey drum sticks, sweet potatoes, and cranberry sauce, and, by golly, a score or more of fellow RVers showed up bringing their lawn chairs, their pets, and something to share for the meal.&nbsp; And then Peaches and Sunshine showed up!&nbsp; &nbsp;Honking and waving, grinning and shouting, \u201cHeard you guys were doin\u2019 some Rainbow Family-Style dining.\u201d&nbsp; Under a clear night, with just a sliver of a moon, we showed the Sun &amp; Surf crowd our best videos, shared our fellow-travelers\u2019 best jokes, and watched the Wizard of Oz on the big screen TV. &nbsp;Thinking about it the next day, we thought maybe half the crowd had ended up thinking being a Pirate was maybe the best way to go \u2013 more fun than being a Forward, and more understandable than being a Trumpeter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chapter 39 Thanksgiving, 2022, on the Road &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Wednesday before Thanksgiving, a balmy low 80s-degree day, Huck arrived and without Sunshine and Peaches.&nbsp; \u201cThey know where we are, though,\u201d he told Patty, \u201cIt\u2019s just they wanted to go see some &hellip; <a class=\"more-link\" href=\"http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/?p=2392\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[22],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2392"}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=2392"}],"version-history":[{"count":8,"href":"http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2392\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":2796,"href":"http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2392\/revisions\/2796"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=2392"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=2392"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=2392"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
