Chapter 42<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ken Comes Clean<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      With the Land Yacht to themselves, mostly bored, Skip and Rocky were playing cards when Max came in after one of his long walks.  He had just had another long talk with Lisa after Lisa had had a long talk with Ken.  Here\u2019s how Max described his conversation with Lisa (to Skip and Rocky):<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cLisa never really said much of anything about the ballpark bombing.  Mostly it was a defense of her brother, extolling his virtues, but I did get her talking more about this new thing Ken\u2019s doing in Vancouver, making a movie \u2013 and it\u2019s not just any ol\u2019 movie . . .<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cApparently there\u2019s a sizable Somali community in Vancouver and some Hollywood types were up there to make a movie about jihadi recruiting, but the community took umbrage about it, saying it made it look like all Somalis are would be terrorists . . .<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo apparently Ken took it upon himself to prove otherwise.  Ken claims it\u2019s just the opposite:  Vancouverites are really proud of how their Somali community has assimilated and been accepted.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c So Ken wants to make the movie about that \u2013 says that the movie does two things:  exposes the U.S.A\u2019s wrong-headed policies; and shows the jihadi movement for what it isn\u2019t \u2013 something to do with religion.  He thinks it will be a dynamite documentary juxtaposing devout Muslims in Canada living a life of peace and relative prosperity with disenchanted Somalis in the USA, ripe for recruitment, not feeling like they belong, being dissed by Trumpers \u2013 (and cowboys I reminded him) \u2013 and, Ken claims, that\u2019s how they become lone wolves launching terrorist attacks as foot soldiers of the Islamic State \u2013 like the ballpark bombing.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

     \u201cI don\u2019t buy it,\u201d Skip interjected.  \u201cFirst, he says it\u2019s the CIA; now it\u2019s a movie venture.  And really nothing about the plot to blow up Dodger Stadium?  Did he tell Lisa anything at all about that<\/em>?\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

     \u201cNot much that you don\u2019t already know,\u201d Max replied, \u201cjust that Gordy\u2019s cellmate was also up in Vancouver doing something that got him close to the Somali community, and Gordy somehow knew something was up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u201cDid we get a name?  That cellmate?\u201d  Rocky asked. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u201cNo,\u201d Max said.  \u201cKen called him \u2018John Doe-something-or-rather.\u2019 Next stop would be the registry at the Bureau of Prisons, if you guys are gonna stay with this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     Not too many minutes after Max finished telling Skip and Rocky what he learned from Lisa, Skip\u2019s phone rang.  Here\u2019s what Max and Rocky heard on their end; Skip did not have it on speaker phone and pretended no one else was around:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Skip:  \u201cYeah, Hi Ken.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      (pause)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     Skip:  \u201cNo I didn\u2019t tell your ex-brother-in-law everything \u2013 just that I was worried about you \u2013 and maybe your sister would want to check-in \u2013 you know, just see if maybe you\u2019ve gotten in too deep on that dis-engagement thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     (pause)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Skip:  \u201cYeah I know, but I know that\u2019s not the whole story, too.  Either I get the whole story now<\/em> or I go to the Fibbies with everything I know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     (longer pause)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     Skip:  \u201cNo Shit\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     (longer pause)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Skip:  \u201cFucking unbelievable\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     (pause)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     Skip:  \u201cOkay, okay, that explains the CIA white lie; but look we\u2019re all friends here, you should tell your sister all this, too.  Maybe all us together can save your ass, maybe make you a national hero, rather than you ending up in jail and us too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     (pause)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     Skip:  \u201cBut Ken, not unless you tell me why that bomb didn\u2019t go off where anybody would get hurt . . .\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     (pause)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     Skip:  \u201cOkay.  I get it.  More later.  Peace Out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     \u201cWhat!!  What did he say?!\u201d  Max and Rocky screamed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     \u201cWell,\u201d Skip dove in, \u201cfor starters, he was ranting and raving about me getting Max and Lisa involved, claims I violated a level of trust we had, said I was \u2018a fucking asshole\u2019 for putting his sister at risk now too.  <\/em>But when I threatened him with going to the FBI, he calmed down and gave me some good reasons why not to \u2013 and I think this time he\u2019s telling the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     \u201cHe actually is<\/em> working both sides of the street.  Yep, helping the Somali community keep ISIS from making any recruiting inroads, but also<\/em> with Gordy he\u2019s got someone inside<\/em>, someone who\u2019s part of the fuckin\u2019 ISIS recruiting cell!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     \u201cOh my God,\u201d Max said, feeling faint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     Skip continued on, \u201cHe never gave me the name of the insider.  My guess is that it\u2019s our \u2018John Something-or-rather\u2019 who knows Gordy \u2013 Gordy Ettinger \u2013 from being cellmates.  And this is a good one . . . just now on the phone Ken told me that after getting out of prison, our \u2018John Doe\u2019 ended up joining a posse comitatus in Vancouver, and somehow that posse<\/em> has<\/em> ties<\/em> to<\/em> the<\/em> jihadis<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     \u201cNo, that\u2019s unbelievable,\u201d Rocky interrupted.  \u201cThey\u2019re natural enemies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u201cGo figure,\u201d Skip replied.  \u201cAll I\u2019m hypothesizing is that our John Doe figure, through Ettinger, brought remnants of the SLA gang into the posse movement, and they\u2019re responsible for the bombing at Dodger Stadium.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

     \u201cHoly God Almighty,\u201d Rocky said under his breath, \u201cthe puzzle\u2019s falling in place.  We connect the posse in Vancouver with the posse in Boulder, and we\u2019re close to solving two \u2018who-dun-its,\u2019 but tell me again why this shouldn\u2019t all get reported, right now, to whomever is in charge, especially the terrorism angle?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     \u201cBecause it\u2019s deeper than that,\u201d Skip finished with.  \u201cKen might need our help.  Because \u2013 get this \u2013 because he suspects another <\/em>terrorist attack is in the works and there are some innocent people who need to get a safe way out first.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

     \u201cNo, not going there,\u201d Max was quick with, \u201cand I don\u2019t think Lisa will either \u2013 certainly not anybody else on this bus.  Count me out.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
