{"id":263,"date":"2024-01-25T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-01-25T01:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/?p=263"},"modified":"2024-01-01T18:35:31","modified_gmt":"2024-01-01T18:35:31","slug":"the-moulin-rouge-1971","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/?p=263","title":{"rendered":"The Moulin Rouge  [1971]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Everybody has to leave!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>My junior year in college I was lucky enough to take a course that included a trip to London, Paris, Rome and Malta with kids from a half-dozen midwestern schools.&nbsp; Round trip plane fare, three weeks of hotel rooms and meals, plus college credits, all for under $1,000 (1971 dollars).&nbsp;&nbsp; Made a bunch of new friends, including a small town Iowa guy who was the quarterback of the Luther College football team.&nbsp;&nbsp; In Paris he and I went out-on-the-town looking for some action (a bar with single girls).&nbsp; We headed to the only place we\u2019d heard about, the Moulin Rouge.&nbsp; Most of the bars had some guy in front saying \u201cGirls, Girls, Girls, Come Right In,\u201d but it all seemed too red-lightish to me and I said to my friend, \u201cLet\u2019s find some other part of town with real girls.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_265\" style=\"width: 303px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/QB-rt-side-up.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-265\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-265 \" alt=\"A football QB in Paris\" src=\"http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/QB-rt-side-up-293x300.jpg\" width=\"293\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/QB-rt-side-up-293x300.jpg 293w, http:\/\/andydawkins.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/QB-rt-side-up.jpg 736w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 293px) 100vw, 293px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-265\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A football QB in Paris<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After having no success in any part of town, he convinced me to return to the Moulin Rouge.&nbsp; It was well past midnite.&nbsp; There was still one guy hawking in front of an establishment, and no cover charge, so we went in.&nbsp; Sure enough as soon as we sat down at the bar, two pretty girls sidled up to us.&nbsp; \u201cWhiis-keey for meee?\u201d they asked sounding more French than English.&nbsp; Sure we said, but when the bartender said that\u2019ll be 45 francs each (like $50 in today\u2019s money), I knew we\u2019d been taken.&nbsp; But lo and behold, we were invited down some stairs into a private room with a dance floor, soft music, low lights, and plush red couches.&nbsp; Okay, I thought, maybe this will be worth it.&nbsp; Then my quarterback friend, Bill, whispered to me, \u201cThey want us to buy them a bottle of wine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you kidding?!\u201d I said, \u201cDo you know how much a bottle of wine will cost??!!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t care,\u201d he said, \u201cI\u2019m doing it.\u201d&nbsp; A couple minutes later he was signing over every one of his Traveler\u2019s Checks to the bar.&nbsp; Okay, I thought, this should be fun.<\/p>\n<p>But no sooner had we popped the cork, then one of the bouncer guys came down and said in perfectly good English, \u201cClosing time \u2013 everybody has to leave.\u201d&nbsp; Now Bill was a pretty big guy, but this guy was bigger \u2013 and he had reinforcements, so despite our protestations, we were back out on the street with no girls and Bill with no money.&nbsp; He was super-pissed.&nbsp; We waited for awhile to see if anyone else came out or in, but no sign of life.&nbsp; Then, from across the street, maybe 40 yards down, to my surprise and awe Bill heaved this perfect spiral of a rock right through their plate glass window &#8212; and I outran him to our hotel.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<hr align=\"center\" noshade=\"noshade\" size=\"1\" width=\"100%\">\n<\/div>\n<p>No virus found in this message.<br \/>\nChecked by AVG &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.avg.com\/\">www.avg.com<\/a><br \/>\nVersion: 2013.0.3462 \/ Virus Database: 3658\/6909 &#8211; Release Date: 12\/10\/13<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Everybody has to leave!
