When Fred left my parents\u2019 a year before at age 18, she\u2019d come to Florida with a different <\/span>boyfriend who was going to be a car mechanic at his cousin\u2019s gas station, but shortly after arriving she\u2019d split from him and taken up with this guy Michael.  At any rate, after Bob and Michael took off for the store, I\u2019m in the living room standing by the window while Fred\u2019s in the kitchen, and I\u2019m telling her about my plans and my future, when I realize this is the first time Fred and I were alone without Michael being around, so I ask how she\u2019s doing.  \u201cNot so good,\u201d she says, \u201cMichael\u2019s beating me up.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat!  Jesus Christ Fred!  What do you mean \u2018beating you up?\u2019 \u2013 do you want to go with me and Bob to Denver?\u201d  I had no idea she wasn\u2019t happy being in Florida.<\/p>\n

\u201cCould I go with you guys?\u201d she says.  Of course! I tell her, and can\u2019t wait to whisper to Bob when he gets back that we\u2019re back on T<\/b>he R<\/b>escue M<\/b>ission!<\/b><\/p>\n

Then she tells me that the last straw was when he made her make up the lie about the landlord and the Volare just to get me and Bob away from her . . . \u201cand if my own Brother can\u2019t even come for a visit, well I\u2019m done with him\u201d . . . but, she says, \u201cI still want to think it over a little bit.\u201d  She\u2019ll have to leave the dog she loves dearly \u2013 \u2018cos it\u2019s really Michael\u2019s dog . . . and maybe she should stick with Michael because she\u2019s been trying to help him with his drug and depression issues.<\/p>\n

Fred’s always been an angel, but to a guy . . . to a guy with a . . .<\/p><\/div>\n

\u201cYah, you can be an angel to him Fred,\u201d I tell her, \u201cbut not if he\u2019s beating you up!\u201d  And she tells me about the few times he\u2019s hit her.  \u201cOnce is enough Fred!  You\u2019re Outta Here!\u201d<\/p>\n

Just before Bob and Michael come in the door, she says, “OK, I’ll think about it – why don’t you and Bob pretend like you’re leaving town and stay at a motel and come find me at the Ramada Inn (where she waitressed) around lunch time tomorrow and I’ll let you know.”<\/p>\n

Tomorrow:  T<\/b>he N<\/span><\/b>ew<\/span> R<\/b>escue M<\/b>ission<\/p>\n
